Description

An isoqinoline alkaloid found in plants of the genera Berberis and Coptis. It was shown to have a chemopreventive property against colon tumor formation by inhibiting the enzyme cyclooxygenase-2 (cox-2) which is abundantly expressed in colon cancer cells. It also inhibites Activator Protein 1 (AP-1), a transcription factor which palys a critical role in inflammation and carcinogenesis.
